Trump makes a last-minute backtrack on his pick to lead NASA
by Jackson Chen (Engadget is a web magazine with obsessive daily coverage of everything new in gadgets and consumer electronics) on June 1, 2025
NASA's next mission will be to find a new agency leader, following a dramatic reversal from President Donald Trump. In a post made on Truth Social, the president withdrew his nomination of Jared Isaacman as the head of NASA. As first reported by Semafor, the pullback comes just a few days before Isaacman was due in front of the US Senate for a confirmation vote. Trump detailed in the post that he will soon announce another nominee who is more aligned with the president's mission and will "put America First in Space." Liz Huston, a White House spokesperson, said in a statement that it was "essential that the next leader of NASA is in complete alignment with President Trump’s America First agenda." According to The New York Times, unnamed sources attribute the withdrawal to Isaacman's previous donations to "prominent Democrats." Besides his role as CEO of payment processing company Shift4, Isaacman has been venturing into the world of commercial space travel. The billionaire businessman has been to space twice now, even serving as the mission commander of the Polaris Dawn mission that was operated by SpaceX and saw the first commercial spacewalk. Isaacman was known as a close ally of Elon Musk, who is the CEO of SpaceX and recently left his White House role as an adviser to the president. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/science/space/trump-makes-a-last-minute-backtrack-on-his-pick-to-lead-nasa-153253836.html?src=rss

Stranger Things 5 finally has its release date
by Cheyenne MacDonald (Engadget is a web magazine with obsessive daily coverage of everything new in gadgets and consumer electronics) on June 1, 2025
The long, long wait for Stranger Things 5 is almost over. Netflix has finally revealed the release date for the show's fifth and final season: November 26. At least, that's when the first part will drop. Just like Season Four, Stranger Things 5 will be released in chunks, so you won't be able to binge it all in one go from the outset. Volume One, which will have four episodes, comes out on November 26 at 8PM ET (5PM PT), followed a month later by three episodes for Volume Two on Christmas (December 25) and the final episode on New Year's Eve (December 31). If you need a little refresher on where we're picking back up with the Hawkins crew — I sure do — here's the synopsis for Season Five: The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time. With that, the countdown to the end has officially begun. There's 177 days to go as of today, which leaves you plenty of time to rewatch all four seasons in preparation. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/streaming/stranger-things-5-finally-has-its-release-date-152255914.html?src=rss

Riots after Southport attack more similar to those in 1958 than in 2011, study finds
by Hannah Al-Othman North of England correspondent (World news | The Guardian) on June 1, 2025
Researchers question characterisation of unrest as ‘far-right protests’ and say it had more in common with race riotsThe riots that swept the UK last summer had more in common with race riots in the 1950s in Nottingham and in Notting Hill, west London, than they did with disorder that broke out in 2011, researchers have said.Violence first erupted on the streets of Southport after the murder of three young girls, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, and Bebe King, six, at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in the Merseyside town. The perpetrator, Axel Rudakubana, was later jailed for a minimum of 52 years. Continue reading...

Lamborghini Revuelto driven at the Navi Mumbai International Airport
by Hormazd Sorabjee (Autocar India) on June 1, 2025
Imagine a place where going slower than 300kph could be dangerous. A stretch of tarmac where speed isn’t optional – it’s essential. This is no ordinary road but a 3.7km-long runway where wide-body jets will routinely land at speeds between 240kph and 290kph. Going slower could mean stalling in mid-air. Welcome to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, a mega infrastructure project decades in the making and now nearing completion. And what better way to break in this monumental stretch of virgin tarmac than with something equally monumental – the Lamborghini Revuelto. Why the Revuelto? Simply because it is currently the fastest car on sale in India, and like the Navi Mumbai airport, it’s a celebration of the future. Besides, Lambos take their inspiration from fighter jets, which is another good reason to choose this air-piercing missile for this epic run. Lambo’s flagship hypercar is an all-wheel-drive, 1,015hp, plug-in hybrid V12 that combines outrageous performance with bleeding-edge tech. It’s the most powerful Lamborghini ever made, and on a runway designed to handle the world’s largest passenger aircraft – the Airbus A380 – this raging bull has the kind of space it deserves. A space where it can run free. Revuelto is the perfect car to inaugurate Navi Mumbai Airport’s main runway. The 6.5-litre V12, augmented by three electric motors – two up front for torque vectoring and one in the gearbox, maximises traction and can catapult the car from 0-100kph in just 2.5 seconds and 200kph in 7 seconds flat. But today, we’re aiming higher. Much higher. I ‘taxi’ to the edge of the runway in EV mode, the silent all-electric drive of the Revuelto adding to the surreal. I’m in a place where horsepower wears wings, where speed is measured in knots, and where it’s lift – not grip – that rules. This is a rarefied space usually reserved for jets and flight crews, not a lone hypercar, and I have the runway all to myself. I’m not one of 200 passengers stuffed into an economy seat. In fact, it’s a carbon-fibre bucket I’m belted into. Frankly, I can’t believe I am here, but I am, and I’m savouring every heartbeat. Jet fighter-inspired cockpit makes Revuelto an apt choice for this epic ‘flight’. The runway lights shimmer in the distance, distorted by the rising heat haze. They’ve been switched on just for me to give the full effect of what it must feel like for a pilot. Red, green, white and amber, these lights aren’t just decoration. Each colour and each placement speaks a coded language to pilots: where to go, when to stop, and when it’s safe to take off. The tall amber lights at the edges mark the runway boundary. They cost an eye-watering Rs 90,000 each, and I’ve been warned. “You hit them, you pay,” says Prabhat Mahapatra, the chief operating officer of Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL). The economics of aviation run at a different altitude altogether. Here, a crore barely registers. In this world of multi-crore fuel bills, Rs 12 crore for a Revuelto suddenly feels cheap! Steering clear of the runway lights, which cost Rs 90,000 a pop. At Navi Mumbai airport, safety dictates everything – and that means no compromises. Everything here is built to global standards, from the precision of the taxiways to the finishing of the terminals. It’s world-class in every sense, the kind of place where pilots and passengers alike could easily believe they’ve landed in Singapore or Frankfurt. And yet, getting here tells a different story. Outside the airport gates, the roads are a patchwork of potholes and half-hearted paving, with haphazard signage that leaves you guessing. But, we are told that better roads and easier access to the airport are being planned. And by the way, it took us just 35 minutes from the Autocar office in Chinchpokli to the airport’s entrance gates! Lamborghini Revuelto vs Runway “Autocar 25, you’re cleared for take-off.” Those words crackle over the walkie-talkie, my cue for the ‘pre-flight’ check. Tyre pressures are okay, the Drive mode is turned to Corsa, and the EV system is set to max performance. Launch Control? That’s an absolute no-no because the one thing the NMIAL authorities do not want is strips of rubber laid down on the road! I prod the accelerator a bit, get the Revuelto rolling off the line, and then mash my right foot down hard. We’re off – like we’ve been launched from a catapult. This isn’t a drive. This is a lift-off! Revuelto’s rear wing is designed for maximum downforce, not lift. 240, 270, 300, the numbers flash by. The car stays arrow-straight, the active rear wing adjusting its angle for maximum downforce – quite the opposite of a plane’s wings, which are designed to generate lift. The digital speedo flashes 355kph before the soft limiter intervenes as if to say, “Okay, that’s enough for today.” Accounting for speedo error, the true top speed is 350kph. It’s capped not because the Revuelto can’t go faster but because of the limitation of the tyres at higher speeds. The sheer violence with which the Revuelto hits its top speed tells you that without restriction, it could go even faster. Maybe 400? There’s still one gear left! The Revuelto maxes out in seventh gear rather than eighth. That’s because eighth is more of an overdrive, geared for cruising rather than top-end performance. Seventh, with its shorter ratio, is where the V12 has enough torque and revs to push the car to its terminal velocity. The Revuelto maxes out in seventh gear, with one gear still left. The Revuelto reaches its top speed in less than 2km, leaving me with 1.7 km to slow down. I could have used another 1km to accelerate if I needed to because the Revuelto’s carbon ceramic brakes, each disc bigger than your dinner plate, haul it down from ludicrous speed with the poise of an aircraft with reverse thrusts on full. And then, there’s that fabulous-sounding V12. Lamborghini has gone all out to preserve the drama of a naturally aspirated engine, even in this hybrid era. The 6.5-litre V12 still screams to 9,500rpm, its pitch climbing with every rev, getting more maniacal and spine-tingling the closer it gets to redline. It’s not just loud; it’s operatic! Add to it the lightning-quick shifts from the new 8-speed DCT, and the Revuelto’s acceleration becomes not just relentless but also brutal in the best possible way. On this expansive 45-metre-wide runway, where there’s no traffic, no fear, and nowhere to go but straight, the Revuelto doesn’t just feel fast. It feels... right. That’s because this is a speed that belongs in the sky. The Revuelto hit a speedo-indicated top speed of 355kph in just 2kms. And that’s fitting because this is no ordinary strip of asphalt. The runway is Code F-compliant, built to handle aircraft like Boeing 777s and the mammoth Airbus A380, with max takeoff weights of around 560 tonnes. That’s over 400 times heavier than the Revuelto, which today, feels like a feathered dart on an Olympic javelin pitch. An entire hill was levelled to make this airport happen. Rivers were rerouted. High-tension power lines were shifted. It is infrastructure on a scale few can imagine. And today, before the first jetliner arrives, we’re giving it its maiden run – not with wings but with four tyres and a V12 symphony. Aircraft boarding staircase came in good use for our camera team. What strikes you most isn’t just the speed or the violence of acceleration. It’s the serenity. The runway is so perfectly surfaced, so wide, so devoid of distractions that the Revuelto feels eerily at home. It glides. It howls. It slices the air like a jet. In those few moments, you forget it’s a car. You forget you’re on Earth. Soon, this runway will be home to boarding gates, taxiways and destination boards, and when I take my first commercial flight from here, I’ll smile – because I first flew from here, not in the air, but on the ground. In a Revuelto. Q&A with Prabhat Mahapatra, COO, NMIL We’ve driven at 355kph on this runway, but that’s a normal speed for an aircraft to land and take off, isn’t it? During a takeoff, it’s about 300kph, and while landing, it’s around 240-290kph, depending on the type of aircraft. Tell us about what went into building this world-class runway. This runway is built for Code F aircraft like the Airbus A380, and the strength of the runway is based on the expected number of landings per year. Most of this land was hilly, so the surface is extremely hard – absolutely best in class. This runway is equipped with the Instrument Landing System Category II, allowing landings in low visibility up to 350 metres. The runway is 45 metres wide, with 15-metre shoulders on either side and a total length of 3,700 metres, suitable for all aircraft types. Tell us about the planned second runway and how it will help operations. The control tower, which is the heart of airport ops, is nearing completion. The constraint at CSMIA (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport) isn’t the terminal capacity; it’s the runway capacity. The two runways intersect, so only one can be used at a time. With NMIAL, the bottleneck at Mumbai will be completely decongested. The North Runway is expected to be commissioned by 2029. So, effectively, there will be three parallel runways in the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai systems, which will greatly enhance capacity. With both our runways operating simultaneously, we’re expecting around 90 to 100 movements per hour. How is this airport going to be better than CSMIA, the existing Sahar airport? Land was a constraint in Mumbai, which is why the CSMIA terminal building is curved in shape. In Navi Mumbai, the terminal is linear, enabling us to have more travelators, so passengers don’tneed to walk more than 400 metres. In addition to the immigration counters, we’re heavily investing in digitisation with a Fast Track Trusted Traveller programme, where passengers can check in or out without manual intervention. We’ll be introducing CTX baggage scanning machines in the future. Digi Yatra will be in place from day one, and we’ll also have a team of data scientists generating a lot of data points, which stakeholders can use to improve airport efficiency. Our focus has been on technology, providing a best-in-class passenger experience, using digitisation to the fullest and prioritising sustainability. Terminal buildings at NMIAL are getting ready and will have state-of-the-art facilities. We’re also placing a strong emphasis on sustainability. From the very first day of operations, electric vehicles will be mandatory, and we’ll soon be installing solar power as well. Ultimately, this airport will have the capability to handle 90 million passengers annually. Tell us about how critical regulations are in setting up an airport. Our two biggest regulators in India are for safety and security. For safety, it’s the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and for security, it’s the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. We must follow every regulation to ensure passenger safety and security. And as the Adani Group, we don’t compromise at all on safety or security. Hyundai Creta diesel automatic resale value highest in segment: Autocar-Spinny study
by Saumil Shah (Autocar India) on June 1, 2025
The midsize SUV space, often referred to as the ‘Creta segment’ is dominated by Hyundai, which despite wearing a Rs 11-20 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag, consistently features in the top-10 cars sold in the new car market, which is an incredible feat. To grab a piece of its pie, several players have entered the market namely, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, Honda Elevate, Citroen Aircross, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Grand Vitara. For this study, we focus on how these models fare in the used car space. Used midsize SUV resale value study results Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, and MG Astor exhibit similar depreciation patterns to each other. *ASP stands for average selling price; DEP stands for Depreciation. The Hyundai Creta’s strong brand equity propels its value in the used market. Particularly the diesel-automatic variants, which depreciate at the flattest rate over four years. Its sibling the Kia Seltos also exhibits a similar trend, although it is interesting to note that three year old examples depreciate slower than a corresponding Creta. An interesting observation is that for the most part, used diesel examples of the Creta and Seltos hold their value better than their petrol counterparts. Rivals that entered the market in 2021 are the Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, and MG Astor, all of which exhibit similar depreciation patterns to each other. One-year old examples of the Honda Elevate hold their value a bit better than the abovementioned cars, since it is too new, it is too soon to come to any conclusions. Due to limited transaction data, models like the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Citroen Aircross were excluded from this study. Autocar India-Spinny Resale Value Study This finding is based on a joint study conducted by Autocar India in collaboration with Spinny, a leading used car platform operational in 22 cities across India, including Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Indore. Spinny provided average selling prices (ASP) derived from actual transactions of 21,944 cars sold across its network during the 2024 calendar year. For the purpose of the study, if a particular model had multiple engine options of the same fuel type, or came in multiple variants, these were merged and averaged. Depreciation was calculated as the percentage difference between a car’s on-road price in its year of manufacture and its resale price in 2024. BMW iX1 LWB or Kia EV6 with discounts: which premium EV to buy?
by Autocar India News Desk (Autocar India) on June 1, 2025
I had finalized the BMW iX1, but then I read your comparison in the magazine, where you ranked the BYD Sealion 7 higher. Now, to complicate things further, the Kia dealer has reached out with an offer for the 2025 EV6, which is much more expensive, at a price similar to the other two. I'm genuinely confused now. Given this new development, which one should I go for? Vinay Gupta, Surat Autocar India says: If you’ve always coveted the BMW badge, the iX1 is a well-priced, well-rounded EV. While its performance isn’t the strongest, it offers a compelling mix of brand prestige, ride comfort, and handling finesse that arguably outshines the other options on your list. The BYD Sealion 7 is another excellent choice. It’s significantly larger than the BMW, giving it strong road presence. As BYD’s flagship SUV, it feels premium, with plush seating and a high level of comfort. The AWD Performance variant is quick but not very efficient—if long-distance travel is a priority, the RWD Premium version is a better bet for range. However, if you’re getting a great deal on the Kia EV6, it’s hard to ignore. With a spacious cabin, a rich feature set, and a more refined user experience, it stands out. Acceleration is brisk, and in our tests, it managed nearly 500 km in a mixed city-highway cycle—better than the others here. The only real downside is the rear seat comfort, which isn’t on par with the rest. But if that’s not a deal-breaker, the EV6 should be your pick. TVS iQube 2.2 road test, review
by Dinshaw Magol (Autocar India) on May 31, 2025
The TVS iQube has routinely been among the top-selling electric scooters since its launch in 2020, and the very first one came with a 2.2kWh battery. Subsequently, TVS nixed that version and introduced newer variants with bigger batteries, but with ever-increasing inflation leading to larger price tags and a government subsidy that’s all but gone, TVS reintroduced the 2.2kWh option last year. It is now the new entry-level iQube and took over that role from the 3.4kWh variant. But is this 2.2kWh variant a genuinely usable scooter that retains the iQube’s strong points, or is it hamstrung in some way or another like most other budget-friendly e-scooters? After having ridden it extensively for a week, we have an answer. TVS iQube 2.2 design and features (8/10) Staid design and no groundbreaking features, but everything works wonderfully The iQube’s rather innocuous, boxy design hasn’t changed in the last five years, and if one passes you on the road, you’ll likely not give it a second look. All that notwithstanding, what is more pertinent here is that unlike other budget-friendly electric scooters, the iQube’s 2.2 variant doesn’t cheap out in terms of features or usability. It has a large 30-litre boot, a park assist function, a reasonably fast 650W charger, a handy brake-lock clasp, a colour TFT display, a 75kph top speed and even a front disc brake. Most of these features are also seen on the higher variants, so aside from the smaller battery and its lower range, from an end-user perspective, you don’t really get a lot less for your money. The standard 650W charger is quite compact and tops up the battery reasonably quickly. Addressing the boot for just a minute before we move on, the 30-litre unit is slightly smaller than the 32-litre unit on all the other variants. And while that’s still pretty spacious, it is rather shallow, so fitting tall items inside may prove to be a challenge. 30-litre boot on the 2.2 is slightly smaller than the other variants. It’s spacious enough but not very deep. There are a few areas where TVS can polish the iQube even further. For starters, it really should have a multi-function ignition key slot, just like the TVS Jupiter does. Opening the boot via its dedicated key slot is a more cumbersome process than it needs to be, especially if you’ve got your hands full with a bag of groceries or something of the sort. Another little irritant is that if you use the Park Assist function (which can take you both forward and backwards), once you’re done, the motor shuts off, and you again need to press the start button and the brake lever to switch it on once more. The iQube’s charger should also lock into place (like the Ather’s does), so no one can tamper with it when you’re charging it in an open area. And finally, you shouldn’t be forced to use the TVS app for something as simple as resetting the trip meter on the TFT display. TFT display shows you all the relevant information, but some functions are needlessly complicated. TVS iQube 2.2 ride and handling (9/10) Plush suspension setup and comfortable ergos are hallmarks of the iQube Happily, all those niggles fade away into the background once you (swiftly and silently) get on the move. The iQube is one of the few scooters whose riding experience has always been uncluttered and very similar to a petrol scooter – aside from the pin-drop silence owing to its hub-mounted motor. At 110kg and with a low 770mm perch, this 2.2 variant is one of the lightest electric scooters on sale and is wonderfully manageable for smaller riders. At the same time, the riding position is spacious enough so that taller riders won’t feel cramped, and in general, the iQube’s rider triangle is spot on. Among EVs, the iQube’s riding experience is the closest to that of a petrol scooter. The seat is also generously roomy and can accommodate two full-size adults without a hitch. However, heavier riders will find that the seat’s padding is a little too soft, and they will start sinking into the hard seat base underneath after an hour or so of continuous riding. The seat is spacious but the padding is a little soft, which means heavier riders will sink in after a while. Considering its overarching role as a family scooter, the iQube has respectable handling capabilities, and it feels light on its feet in city traffic without seeming flighty at higher speeds. Credit must also go to its plush suspension setup, which keeps you comfortable and will shield you from all but the nastiest bumps Mumbai’s roads throw at you every so often. Braking performance is not lacking either because the iQube 2.2 is one of the only electric scooters at this end of the market to come with a front disc brake. While it doesn’t have hill-hold control like most other EVs do, the brake-lock clasp comes in handy, especially if you park your vehicle on a slope. Brake-lock clasp is a handy feature, especially since the iQube doesn’t get hill-hold. TVS iQube 2.2 performance and efficiency (9/10) The range claim is extremely accurate, and it is very usable even in Eco mode With a 75kph top speed, this 2.2 variant is slightly slower in outright terms than the others, but never once did it feel like it was unusably slow in the situations we subjected it to. And unlike some other e-scooters where the Eco mode is quite dull, on the iQube, you can easily climb flyovers with a pillion and overtake traffic. Eco limits you to 47kph, and to go faster than that, you need to switch to Power mode, where you get zippier acceleration and can hit the scooter’s top speed. One of the iQube’s hallmarks is its plush suspension setup, which keeps you comfy on our roads. You can easily switch from Eco to Power while you’re on the move by using the dedicated mode switch, but if you want to go back to Eco, you need to slow down to 45kph or less. While initial acceleration from its hub-mounted motor isn’t as energetic as an Ather Rizta’s, the iQube is still a pretty zippy thing, and on most occasions, you’ll overtake everyone else who’s standing at the same signal as you. The motor is very quiet; outright performance is more than enough but initial acceleration lacks urgency. The iQube’s range indicator is ultra-reliable, a factor that greatly aids peace of mind on an EV, and what you see on the screen is how far you’ll actually go. In fact, in our tests, the iQube 2.2 covered 76.4km in Eco when TVS itself claims that the range is 75km. And the fact that you have a reasonably fast 650W charger means that topping up a flat battery to full takes a mere 3 hours and 24 minutes. This combination of a pretty quick charger and a small battery has proven to be a masterstroke, giving this iQube variant one of the quickest charging times in the industry. There are no compromises here, as you see in other EVs at a similar price. TVS iQube 2.2 price and verdict (9/10) The iQube 2.2 is a very compelling option among the affordable EVs currently sold in India Aside from some small UI issues that need ironing out, this Rs 1 lakh iQube 2.2 carries forward all the strong points of the other variants without exception. While it is an affordable machine, crucially, it doesn’t feel cheap. And knowing how reliable our previous TVS iQube S long-termer was, this one, too, should run without any hiccups every time you twist the key – come rain or sunshine. The iQube is one of few EVs at this price to get a front disc brake. Stopping force is decent, and it has CBS. This brings us to the question we posed about the iQube 2.2 at the start: does it feel hamstrung like some similarly priced electric scooters? As we are sure you can tell by now, the answer is an emphatic no. If you are someone whose daily running is under 50km and have secure charging at your home, then choosing this iQube really is a great way to save a lot of money. Also See: TVS iQube 2.2 video review

BYD Sealion 7 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs BMW iX1 LWB comparison
by Soham Thakur (Autocar India) on May 31, 2025
The premium electric vehicles (EV) space has really begun to heat up. While there weren’t any options between the Rs 25 lakh MG ZS EV and the Rs 1 crore Mercedes EQC earlier, now there are as many as six EVs priced around Rs 50 lakh on sale. Of these, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the recently launched BYD Sealion 7 and the locally made BMW iX1 LWB appear to be the most compelling. We brought the three together and put them through our real-world tests to see which one deserves a spot in your garage. All three EVs measure over 4.6 metres in length, over 1.8 metres in width and have a 2.8-metre or longer wheelbase. The BYD is the longest and the widest, the BMW is the tallest, and the Hyundai trumps the other two in wheelbase length. As for their underpinnings, the BYD and Hyundai have born-electric platforms, which allow for better packaging and interior space. As such, these two feature a properly usable frunk (front trunk), which the ICE-to-EV converted BMW lacks. BYD Sealion 7 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs BMW iX1 LWB exterior design and engineering BYD Sealion 7 vs BMW iX1 LWB vs Hyundai Ioniq 5 specificationsSealion 7 PerformanceiX1 eDrive 20LIoniq 5Length4830mm4616mm4635mmWidth1985mm1845mm1890mmHeight1620mm1627mm1625mmWheelbase2930mm2800mm3000mmBoot capacity (F/R)58/500 litresNA/490 litres57/527 litresKerb weight2340kg1948kg2015kgTyre size245/45 R20225/55 R18255/45 R20Battery capacity82.56kWh66.4kWh72.6kWhPower530hp204hp217hpTorque690Nm250Nm350NmDrive layoutAWDFWDRWD Each of these three EVs follows a different form factor. The Ioniq 5 takes the shape of a large hatchback; the iX1 is more like a traditional SUV, while the Sealion 7 looks like a coupé-SUV. It really depends on which style you prefer, but all of them stand out in their own way with distinctive design elements. The Ioniq 5 has a neo-retro look with sharp cuts and creases and unique multi-spoke, dual-tone alloys, and I particularly like the rectangular lighting elements. In contrast, the Sealion 7 has a more rounded design that goes with BYD’s family look. It does look large and ungainly from the front, but the large alloys and the tapering roofline add some flair. At the rear, there’s a connected lighting element, which has some nice details. The BMW is the most conventional by far and has that upright stance of an SUV. It features BMW’s signature kidney grille, which appears a bit too large, as do the LED headlights. Its side profile does not look the most proportionate, thanks to the longer wheelbase and the smaller 18-inch wheels; the rear is quite similar to the standard X1, with large, L-shaped LED tail-lamps. BYD Sealion 7 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs BMW iX1 LWB interior space and comfort The Sealion 7’s interior is superbly finished and loaded with tech, but the instrument cluster is cluttered. All three EVs have distinct identities inside the cabin as well. Starting with the Sealion 7, you’re greeted with a relatively conventional-looking dashboard, which houses the screens for the touchscreen infotainment system and the driver’s display. The 15.6-inch touchscreen, in typical BYD fashion, can change orientation from landscape to portrait, is very slick to operate, has high-res graphics, and even gets an updated UI over its siblings. This screen controls most of the car’s functions, but it’s nice that there are some physical controls in the centre console and a neat trick to adjust the AC without going into the sub-menus. All you have to do is swipe on the screen with three fingers from left to right for fan speed and from top to bottom for the temperature. Tinted glass at the back helps keep the Sealion 7 cool. The driver’s display, too, is high-res, but it appears very cluttered, and a lot of the important info appears small. But you have to commend BYD for the superb material quality and fit-and-finish, which feel on par with European luxury brands. The BYD's high-res 360-degree camera is one of the best. In the centre console, you get two wireless charging pads and two cup holders; there’s even some storage space below the console. The front seats feature ventilation, have just the right amount of cushioning and are very comfortable for occupants of all sizes. At the back, too, the seats feel plush and can be reclined; there’s loads of space, particularly legroom. The large windows and the glass roof elevate the sense of space. BYD’s 500-litre boot can fit in a lot. BYD has also packed the Sealion 7 with features like wireless smartphone integration, a 12-speaker Dynaudio music system, powered front seats, auto headlamps and wipers, a gesture-controlled and powered tailgate, dynamic ambient lighting, and much more. As for safety, there are 11 airbags, including one between the front seats and two for the rear side bolsters. There’s also Level 2 ADAS, a crisp 360-degree camera, and a driver-attention monitor, which is way too sensitive – even briefly glancing at the touchscreen generates a warning. The Sealion 7’s rear seat is big on space and feels the plushest. As for the new iX1 LWB, it has the same dash design as the ICE-powered X1 and the iX1 xDrive30, with a large, curved display that includes the infotainment touchscreen and the instrument panel. There are large, horizontal AC vents on the passenger side of the dash and under the screen, below which a sizeable wireless charging pad is located. The centre console extends from the centre armrest and houses some of the car’s key functions. The screens, while high in resolution, are too complicated tonavigate initially and on the go. While the fit and finish are great, some materials lower in the cabin are hard and scratchy. The steering is typically BMW with a chunky rim; the touchscreen has swallowed too many controls, and the UI is confusing. The front seats are supportive, but larger passengers may find them narrow, and they don’t have ventilation, which the other two EVs provide. The cushioning is firmer than the BYD’s. While the seats may not seem as comfortable initially, you’ll feel the cushioning is well-judged the longer you spend time in them. It’s at the rear where you get to experience the benefits of a long wheelbase. Though you are seated quite low and in a bit of a knees-up position because of the underfloor battery, you get acres of legroom; the seat base is longer by 15mm, and the backrest can be reclined up to 28.5 degrees, all of which make it more comfortable than the standard wheelbase version of the iX1. Compared to the BYD, though, the BMW feels narrower inside, and the backrest cushioning is on the firmer side. What also would’ve added to the comfort is rear sun blinds, which are also missing in the BYD. The iX1 has the most legroom but doesn’t get sunshades. The BMW is the least feature-rich EV here, but it still gets stuff like a large panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, auto LED headlamps, connected tech, a smartphone-enabled key, leather upholstery, eight airbags and Level 2 ADAS tech. BMW’s 490-litre boot is the smallest here. Now, let’s come to the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Step inside it, and you get a great sense of space, thanks to the massive glass area, light colours, flat floor and the absence of a traditional centre console. Hyundai has used recycled and sustainable materials inside, and what’s great is that the fit and finish, as well as the touch and feel of bits, are top-notch. However, the white upholstery stains very easily, as you’d typically expect. The Hyundai's cabin is well-finished, logically laid out and big on practicality; UI is the easiest to use. Headlining the dash are two 12.3-inch screens – one for the instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment. These displays are crisp and easy to read, and the UI is easier to understand and navigate than that of the other two. The steering is a 2-spoke unit that houses a round drive-mode selector, while the drive-selector stalk is beneath the headlamp stalk. Uniquely, the entire centre console slides front and back to tailor the space and access. There are also plenty of storage spaces, such as a huge drawer in place of the glove box, large door bins and the centre console itself. The Ioniq 5's front seats are cooled, heated and get ottomans. The front seats are broad and supremely comfortable, with soft cushioning and plenty of electric adjustments, including extendable leg rests, and they can be configured into a comfy lounger. They also have ventilation and heating. The rear seats, though not as comfy as the ones in front, are easily wide enough for three adults, with the outer two seats featuring heating and electric adjustment. However, you are seated in a knees-up position due to the battery under the floor. The Hyundai's rear seats are wide enough for three, but you’re seated in a knees-up position. The Ioniq 5 also packs in a panoramic fixed glass roof, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, a 360-degree parking camera, dual-zone climate control, an electric boot, ESP, six airbags and ADAS. Wired smartphone integration is a downer, though. The Sealion 7 has an all-wheel drive (there is also an RWD version), the Ioniq 5 is rear-wheel drive and, rather unconventionally, it’s the BMW that’s front-wheel drive. The BYD, in this dual-motor Performance guise, also has a clear advantage in terms of output (530hp/690Nm), followed by the Hyundai (217hp/350Nm) and the BMW (204hp/250Nm). And this is reflected in the performance figures. The Sealion 7 Performance makes the 0-100kph sprint in a brisk 4.43 seconds, compared to the Ioniq’s 7.48 seconds and the iX1’s 11.30 seconds. It’s the same story in rolling acceleration, with the BYD comfortably outperforming its rivals. Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how these feel like to drive, one thing each of them does admirably well is delivering power in a linear manner, unlike EVs of old, which served up all of their performance in one big chunk right from the get-go. All three also get drive modes, which affect throttle sensitivity, power delivery and range. Let’s start with the BYD, which easily feels the quickest of the lot. What’s nice is that it is able to put its power down in a tidy manner, thanks to the AWD system. On the move, you’ll also appreciate how smooth and progressive the power delivery is. And while the powertrain is silent, you will start to hear more of the outside world as you get closer to triple-digit speeds despite it featuring double-glazed front windows. Similarly, in the Hyundai, you don’t get that neck-snapping acceleration; the power delivery is nice and smooth. But that’s not to say that you’ll feel a lack of performance, as the Ioniq 5 feels sprightly in the Sport mode. The throttle modulation has also been judged very well, and it feels like a normal ICE car to drive. What’s also nice is that suspension, road and tyre noises barely disrupt the silence of the cabin. The BMW, by far, feels the most relaxed out of the trio, and while it packs over 200hp, given the weight it has to haul around, it can leave you wanting more, like when you want to make a quick overtake. As it has a front-wheel drive, there’s also some torque steer to contend with when driven flat out. As for sound insulation, it isn’t as quiet on the move as the Ioniq but fares better than the Sealion 7. The Sealion 7 has an 82.56kWh unit with BYD’s blade cell LFP battery technology. The Ioniq 5 has the second-largest battery pack at 72.6kWh, and the BMW has the smallest at 66.4kWh; these two use the NMC battery chemistry. However, the Ioniq 5 has the highest claimed range of 631km, followed by the Sealion 7 (542km) and the iX1 (531km). In our real-world range test, the Ioniq 5 came out on top with a calculated overall range of 457km, significantly higher than the other two. The iX1 LWB had a 398km range, and given the extra power, the BYD delivered the least range of 371km. And, as is the case with most EVs, all three were more efficient in the city cycle, where they can recuperate more energy. The move to the long wheelbase has come at the cost of some agility. All three get multiple regen braking modes, but the BMW has an advantage here with four modes; the Hyundai gets three, while the BYD has only two. One must note that the BMW also has an adaptive regen mode, but it’s not very intuitive, and the Hyundai is the only one in which you can turn off regen, allowing for free coasting. However, the BMW’s mode controls are baked into the touchscreen, making it tedious to change them on the move, and it’s also the most aggressive of the lot. On the other hand, the BYD feels the least aggressive, even in its ‘High’ mode. It’s the Hyundai’s regen that is best tuned, with a natural feel in the lower level, and you can even adjust levels or turn it off via paddle shifters. Also, the iX1 and the Ioniq 5 are capable of one-pedal driving. Despite huge 20-inch alloys, the ride is supple. The Ioniq 5 is the clear winner when it comes to charging speeds, as it is capable of DC fast charging at speeds of up to 350kW, which is enough to take it from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes. The BYD can be charged up to 150kW on a DC fast charger. Both these are also capable of V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) and V2L (vehicle-to-load) functions, wherein they can charge other EVs and power/charge other devices. The BMW can be fast-charged up to 130kW. BYD Sealion 7 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs BMW iX1 LWB ride comfort and handling As for ride and handling, the Sealion 7 has a hint of firmness to its ride, but it manages to deal with road imperfections fairly well. The 20-inch wheels on this AWD version are a fly in the ointment, making it feel crashy over bumps. Given its mass and high centre of gravity, the BYD rolls a fair bit around bends, and its steering feels a little too quick. Smaller 18-inch wheels help give it a cushy ride. The Ioniq 5 feels planted at all speeds, and you’ll like the maturity with which it drives. The steering is direct and has a good heft, but it doesn’t feel sporty to drive, which is fine given its focus on comfort. And despite sitting on those large 20-inch alloys, the ride feels comfy and well-damped, and the Ioniq 5 deals with the rough stuff fairly well. There are some minor vertical movements over expansion joints, but it feels well-controlled. Meanwhile, the long wheelbase has affected the BMW iX1’s handling just as you’d expect. It doesn’t feel as agile as the regular wheelbase, dual-motor iX1 xDrive30, but it still grips corners admirably well with little body roll to speak of. The ride quality, like in most BMWs lately, is excellent. It feels very absorbent and does a good job of making the iX1 feel composed over most surfaces. BYD Sealion 7 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs BMW iX1 LWB price and verdict The iX1, which has BMW’s badge value to bank on, has plenty of space at the back and is very attractively priced at Rs 49 lakh; dynamically, it’s the best here. But it has its shortcomings – it isn’t as equipped as the others; the infotainment system is unnecessarily complex and has swallowed a lot of key functions; the rear-seat backrest cushioning is firm, and certain plastics lower in the cabin feel out of place on a BMW. Now let’s sum up the Sealion 7. It is BYD’s most rounded offering in India yet and has everything we love about the Seal sedan in a more practical package. The interior quality and fit-and-finish are top-notch; it’s got all the tech and features you need, a comfortable backseat, and the most powerful drivetrain that’s quite smooth. It’s also the only one here with all-wheel drive (Rs 54.90 lakh), though there’s an RWD version with a higher claimed range of 567km but a lower output (310hp, 380Nm) and a price tag of Rs 48.90 lakh, which is still more expensive than the Hyundai and with a lower promised range. The Sealion 7 loses ground in its real-world range, which is the lowest, and it isn’t as well-rounded in many specific matters – the sound levels inside the cabin are high, the ride isn’t as plush, and the driver’s display is cluttered. And then, there’s BYD’s relative lack of an aftersales network. And this brings us to the winner, the Hyundai Ioniq 5. It standsout as the most approachable and well-rounded package. The cabin is spacious, the seats are very comfy and unique, and the infotainment is easy to navigate. The Ioniq 5 is also the most natural to drive, has the best real-world range and can charge at the fastest pace. To top it off, it’s the most affordable, too, at Rs 46 lakh. It’s no wonder then that the Ioniq 5 won our Car of the Year 2024 award and this comparison, too. Tata Altroz: best compact diesel car under Rs 12 lakh?
by Autocar India News Desk (Autocar India) on May 31, 2025
I have a budget of about Rs 12 lakh, and I want to buy a compact punchy diesel car that’s also spacious. I am upgrading from my 2014 Maruti Swift Dzire diesel, and I want a car that’s more powerful and offers a more premium experience. What are my options? Adiya, Udaipur Autocar India says: You could consider the new Tata Altroz diesel which would be a logical upgrade from your Dzire diesel and will fit within your budget. The Altroz diesel has a torquey 1.5-litre engine which offers superior performance to the crop of 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrols in that range. In fact, it is the only diesel hatchback currently available in the country. One benefit of the Altroz diesel is that it does not need to be topped up with diesel emission fluid (DEF) or urea like all other diesels. The Altroz has got a recent facelift, so it’s very fresh too. Also See: 2025 Tata Altroz facelift review: Sharp suiter Tata Altroz facelift video review

Hero Destini 125 fuel economy tested, explained
by Dinshaw Magol (Autocar India) on May 30, 2025
Last year Hero revamped its 125cc family scooter, the Destini and we have now been able to put it through our extensive testing routine. Here are the real-world mileage figures we achieved on the 2025 Hero Destini 125. Hero Destini 125 real-world fuel efficiency Destini's real-world mileage comes close to Hero's claimed numbers As per our routine, the highway mileage run was conducted first, where we ran the Destini 125 for a little over 55km, after which it took almost a litre to brim the tank once more. Thereby, we achieved a 57.44kpl highway mileage figure for the Destini. After that, we ran the Destini 125 inside the traffic-riddled streets of Mumbai for a smidge over 50km, after which it took less than a litre of petrol to brim the tank again. Thus, we arrived at a mileage figure of 58.26kpl inside the city. Hero Destini 125 fuel-economy analysis Start/stop tech helps the Destini inside the city Hero claims a mileage number of 60kpl for the Destini and in our tests, it came quite close to that, achieving a combined 58kpl economy figure. Helping the Destini achieve this impressive number are a couple of factors. First, the engine’s punchy nature means you don’t need to wring its neck when making progress, thereby reducing wide open throttle openings and aiding fuel economy. Second, Hero’s i3s start/stop tech cuts the engine off when you’re idling at a stop light and helps save fuel. Start/stop tech is quite beneficial inside city limits, and especially so on a vehicle where fuel economy plays a big factor in the purchase decision. Autocar India’s fuel-efficiency testing Our fuel-efficiency testing routine starts by first brimming the tank and ensuring the scooter is running the manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures. The scooter is then ridden on fixed city and highway routes, where we maintain average speeds that best mimic real-world scenarios as well as keeping speed limits in mind. The payload on the scooters is kept constant by balancing rider weights and ballast, ensuring consistency across different vehicles and riders. At the end of the test cycle, the fuel tank is once again filled to the brim, giving us an accurate figure of how much fuel has been consumed against the trip meter reading. What I'll be watching for tomorrow on the Tesla 3Q Earnings Call

If you want to listen to the call live, go to <a href="https://ir.tesla.com/#tab-quarterly-disclosure" target="_blank">Tesla’s investor relations page and sign in to the webcast from here</a>. I recommend you read the quarterly shareholder letter that always comes out about an hour before the call. If you want to know what changed between the last letter and this one, read last <a href="https://tesla-cdn.thron.com/static/DK2EWG_TSLA_Update_Letter_2020-2Q_G6S6GG.pdf" target="_blank">quarter's shareholder letter</a> too. It's helpful to know that questions to expect and they survey a list of questions from both retail investors and institutional investors before this call. I've captured the questions most likely to be asked as pictures below.<br> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/news/public/retail_q.jpg?itok=JXRxx8KV" alt="Retail Tesla Questions from Say.com" width="700" height="394" loading="lazy" /></p> <p><img src="/sites/default/files/styles/news/public/instituational_q.jpg?itok=G-0Kd3R_" alt="Institutional Tesla Questions from Say.com" width="700" height="394" loading="lazy" /></p> <p><strong>Why Non-Shareholders would listen to the call</strong></p> <p>Any event that has Elon Musk speaking live has a decent chance of being entertaining to Tesla fans and haters alike. Elon has been more reserved and controlled in recent calls, but you have to potential to learn many things about the company from the call. Not only do you hear the commentary and the questions and answers, but you can also tell a lot about how the company is doing by the tone of the call. If they are business-like and rushed, it is a bad sign for the current state of the business. If Elon and the other speakers sound relaxed and happy, it is a sign that things are going well. There is always the potential for the type of commentary you will never hear on any other earnings call, like the time that Elon called a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/innovations/wp/2018/05/03/please-sell-our-stock-elon-musk-clashes-with-wall-street-during-epic-earnings-call/" target="_blank">wall street analyst's question boring and boneheaded</a>. People interested in either the car industry or the environmental movement should be interested in following Tesla because they are the leading company setting the direction and pace of change in both of those areas. </p> <p><strong>What I expect to hear</strong></p> <p>I expect Tesla to reiterate that demand is strong and their primary problem is they just can't make enough batteries, cars, energy storage systems, and solar panels to satisfy demand. I think that is partially true, but I also think products (even products as exciting as Tesla's, with their over the air updates) get stale over time, and as we found last week, <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11826/tesla-increases-range-model-s-3-x-and-y" target="_blank">Tesla updates their products to improve their competitiveness before they start to seem too dated</a>. </p> <p>You notice that there are a lot of questions on batteries. I expect to get some additional info on Tesla's batteries, but not a lot. They just had a well-planned battery day and they released all the info they are comfortable sharing at this time. I think most of the questions they didn't answer (like "when should expect a million-mile battery?") were either not answered for competitive reasons or because they don't want to stall the sales of their current products. </p> <p>Another area I expect a significant update on is solar panels, solar roofs, and energy storage. The part of Tesla's business gets a lot less press than their automotive business, but they have mentioned many times that they expect it to be as large or larger than their automotive business over time. </p> <p>Of course, you will hear a lot of boring financial details about margins, sales, and line items in the income statement that you don't care about if you just care about the company's products. An item that is always controversial is the dollar amount of regulatory credits Tesla gets from its competitors. Many countries or regions have emissions standards and many of them (especially Europe) allow companies to sell credits if they sell more electric cars and less gas and diesel cars than required (since Tesla doesn't sell any gas or diesel cars, they always have credits to sell). </p> <p><strong>What I'd love to hear, but don't expect</strong></p> <p>I'd love to hear when Tesla plans to lower prices or update features in their cars, but Tesla has learned that if they talk about changes in their product that are coming soon, that could cause owners to delay their purchases until the cool new feature comes out. The exception to that is software features since those can just be downloaded to existing cars. I expect Elon to promote Tesla's progress on full self-driving and to encourage people to buy the feature now before it is complete because they will keep raising the prices as they release new features. </p> <p>Another item I'd love to hear about is whether they are looking in China or outside of China to build their next factory in Asia. I think they have already picked the location and are finalizing the negotiations. They may say they are looking for a location, but they don't want to say they have selected the location because they want to give the government they are negotiating with the impression that if they don't offer Tesla a great package of incentives, that Tesla is ready to build their next gigafactory somewhere else. </p> <p>Tesla will release some precise volumes and costs in the shareholder letter before the call, but they usually won't give any greater detail in the call, just an explanation of the detail in the letter. So questions such as "what is the cost to make a battery?" are unlikely to get a direct answer due to Tesla not wanting competitors to know how advanced their technology is or isn't. </p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p>Whether you listen to the call live or wait for us at TorqueNews to summarize the highlights for you, tomorrow's announcement and the call should be both exciting and informative to both Tesla's fans and detractors. </p> <p>Check out the following recent articles of mine.</p> <p><a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11681/tesla-lowers-model-3-prices-norway-australia-new-zealand" target="_blank">Tesla Lowers Model 3 Prices in Norway, Australia & New Zealand</a></p> <p><a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11681/first-pictures-refreshed-2021-tesla-model-3-surface" target="_blank">First Pictures of Refreshed 2021 Tesla Model 3 Surface</a></p> <p><a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11681/tesla-model-3-owner-walks-away-high-speed-head-crash-minor-injuries" target="_blank">Tesla Model 3 Owner Walks Away From High-Speed Head-On Crash With Minor Injuries<br> </a></p> <p><a href="https://www.torquenews.com/users/paul-fosse" target="_blank">Paul Fosse</a> is a Software Engineer delivering financial data marts using massively parallel databases (Exadata and GreenPlum) for a major healthcare insurer and a lifelong lover of cars. Tesla Lowers Model 3 Prices in Norway, Australia & New Zealand

Interestingly, this means either the rumor than <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11826/tesla-plans-ship-cars-made-china-asian-and-europe-end-2020" target="_blank">Tesla plans to ship cars from China to Asia and Europe</a> is false or more likely that the Shanghai plan will convert to the refreshed model 3 first for export and later for domestic consumption. </p> <p><strong>Australian & New Zealand Price Updates</strong><br> The Australian market has <a href="https://www.caradvice.com.au/866630/electric-car-subsidies-how-australia-compares-to-the-rest-of-the-world/" target="_blank">almost no government incentives</a> for EV's, so Tesla must offer a great value on its own merits. New Zealand <a href="https://thedriven.io/2019/07/09/new-zealand-to-make-electric-vehicles-cheaper-with-fee-on-high-polluters/" target="_blank">on the other hand has moderate incentives for electric cars.</a> </p> <p>It doesn't appear these price changes are related to exchange rate differences, since those 2 currencies have been seen little change in their relation to the US dollar in the last few months. In fact, the Chinese Yuan has appreciated about 6% in the last month, so if these cars are coming from China instead of the US, that would cause them to have a price increase, just purely looking at exchange rates. Clearly, the savings in shipping costs, the lowered depreciation expense (since the Shanghai factory was far cheaper to build) and the lower labor costs available in China outweigh increased costs of the strengthening of Chinese currency for Tesla.</p> <p>The Standard Range Model 3 dropped $7,000 or 9% fo $66,900 in Australia and $5,000 or 6% to $74,900 in New Zealand. This makes the Tesla Model 3 a much better buy, especially considering that many would value the new feature as worth about $5,000 for power liftgate, upgraded exterior/interior, and increased range. An Australian Dollar is worth 71 cents and a New Zealand Dollar is 66 cents on October 17th. </p> <p>The Long Range AWD Model 3 dropped $6,000 or 7% to $81,900 in Australia and $5,000 or 5% to $92,900 in New Zealand. The Performance Model 3 dropped $5,000 or 5% to $90,900 in Australia and $5,000 or 5% to $101,900 in New Zealand. </p> <p><br></p> <p><img src="/sites/default/files/norway_new_price_model_3_1200.jpg" width="700" height="394" alt="Tesla Design Studio Model 3 Norway" loading="lazy" /><br> <br><br> <strong>Norway Price Updates</strong></p> <p>The Norway market couldn’t be more different from the Australian and New Zealand market for electric vehicles in terms of incentives. This is highlighted<a href="https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/28/the-incentives-stimulating-norways-electric-vehicle-success/" target="_blank"> in this article that explains the broad ranging support</a>. </p> <blockquote><p>No annual road tax<br> Maximum 50% of the total amount on ferry fares for electric vehicles<br> Parking fee for EVs implemented locally but with an upper limit of a maximum 50% of the full price<br> Access to bus lanes<br> Company car tax reduction reduced to 40%<br> No purchase/import taxes<br> Exemption from 25% VAT on purchase.</p></blockquote> <p>This has caused over half the buyers of new cars in Norway to pick electric cars, but this also means that all the manufacturers send their best EVs to Norway. Tesla has enjoyed great sales in Norway for years, but now is being outsold by the Audi e-tron, Volkswagen e-Golf, Hynundai Kona EV and the Nissan Leaf so far this year. The VW ID.3 is now being sold in large volumes and will be a top seller barring any unforseen issues. </p> <p>Tesla has expanded their delivery resources to deliver a lot of cars in Norway and there will likely be a big increase is sales in the country in 2021 when the Model Y from Berlin is made available. Tesla is likely to give up a little profit on its cars now to continue to expand its operations in the country as it prepares for a large increase in sales next year as the Model Y will be in the very popular crossover category and should be <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11681/model-y-pricing-europe-analyzing-why-it-could-be-less-you-think" target="_blank">very aggressively priced due to the lower costs expected to be enabled by the Berlin Gigafactory</a>.</p> <p>The Standard Range Model 3 dropped 31,000 kroner or 7% to 420,900 kroner. A Norwegian kroner is worth 11 cents on October 17th. The Long Range AWD Model 3 dropped 35,000 kroner or 7% to 449,900 kroner. The Performance Model 3 dropped 40,000 kroner or 7% to 499,900 kroner. </p> <p>Check out the following recent articles of mine.</p> <p><a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11681/first-pictures-refreshed-2021-tesla-model-3-surface" target="_blank">First Pictures of Refreshed 2021 Tesla Model 3 Surface</a></p> <p><a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11681/tesla-model-3-owner-walks-away-high-speed-head-crash-minor-injuries" target="_blank">Tesla Model 3 Owner Walks Away From High-Speed Head-On Crash With Minor Injuries<br> </a></p> <p><a href="https://www.torquenews.com/users/paul-fosse" target="_blank">Paul Fosse</a> is a Software Engineer delivering financial data marts using massively parallel databases (Exadata and GreenPlum) for a major healthcare insurer and a lifelong lover of cars. This isn't always good for the drivers of the trucks, since they don't always have well-designed crumple zones to absorb as much energy as possible. When you are going fast and have to stop in very little time, the more energy the car can absorb the less energy your body has to absorb and the less damage the accident will do to your body. As we discussed in my article yesterday, Tesla designs its vehicles to have large zones that can absorb high-speed impacts and very rigid passenger compartments to protect the passengers of its vehicles. The large and rigid battery pack at the floor of the vehicle adds to the vehicle's safety.<br> <br><br> Reference: <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/tesla/model-3-4-door-sedan/2020" target="_blank">IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick + Tesla Model 3</a><br> <br><br> <a href="https://www.tesla.com/blog/model-3-lowest-probability-injury-any-vehicle-ever-tested-nhtsa" target="_blank">Model 3 achieves the lowest probability of injury of any vehicle ever tested by NHTSA</a><br> <br><br> <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/users/paul-fosse" target="_blank">Paul Fosse</a> is a Software Engineer delivering financial data marts using massively parallel databases (Exadata and GreenPlum) for a major healthcare insurer and a lifelong lover of cars. In my experience, vehicle safety is a major reason to buy a car at certain points in life. When a family has kids, the family, even if they were big risk takers a few years earlier, tends to get very concerned with safety. The family starts to realize they have given up so much of their time and wealth to have kids, they want to do everything in their power to protect them from harm. Sometimes this goes too far and overprotective parents hurt their children by not letting them take reasonable risks and learn from them. But I digress. Another event that changes a family's perspective is when their teenage child first starts driving. Parents buy them a safe car so that if they make a mistake and crash, their chance of injury is reduced. </p> <p><img src="/sites/default/files/styles/news/public/tesla_top_safety_1200.jpg?itok=l8nTTomz" alt="Tesla vehicles have the lowest risk of injury" width="700" height="394" loading="lazy" /></p> <p>One of Tesla's first crash tests was with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about 2 years ago. Not only did they receive a 5 star rating, when you dug into the details of the report, but the car also had the lowest probability of injury of any car the agency had EVER tested. NHTSA has been testing cars using its current test since 2011. How did Tesla achieve such a market-leading feat? My opinion is they look at safety in a different way. Other companies design their cars for a given market and design them to "pass" the required safety tests. Have you ever heard the old joke about engineers? “Any idiot can build a bridge that stands, but it takes an engineer to build a bridge that barely stands." It seems most manufacturers use their engineering talent to make their cars "safe enough". Tesla of course has to be concerned about cost and weight, but the company strives to make its cars safer than any other vehicle, not just safe enough to pass the tests. </p> <p>Tesla put it this way in the blog post that announced the results of their historic NHTSA test result. </p> <blockquote><p>Model 3 benefits from its all-electric architecture and powertrain design, which consists of a strong, rigid passenger compartment, fortified battery pack, and overall low center of gravity. These safety fundamentals help to prevent intrusion into the cabin and battery modules, reduce rollover risk, and distribute crash forces systematically away from the cabin – all while providing the foundation for our superior front crumple zone that is optimized to absorb energy and crush more efficiently. </p></blockquote> <iframe title="vimeo-player" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/291143444" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><p> When you watch the video above, it becomes obvious why electric cars without a front engine are safer than gas and diesel cars with a large engine. They simply have more space to absorb the impact. This has a dramatic effect in higher speed head on crashes. When I was growing up, it was common for people to get severe injuries or even die in crashes that were only 25 or 30 mph. Look at the picture below of a 1996 Chevy Astro Minivan. Now it is common to survive crashes at 40 MPH and even faster.</p> <p><img src="/sites/default/files/styles/news/public/1996_astro_moderate_40mph_1200.jpg?itok=Jg7O01Tw" alt="1996 Chevy Astro Crash Test" width="700" height="394" loading="lazy" /></p> <p>Compare that to the image below of the Tesla Model 3 crashed at the same speed. </p> <p><img src="/sites/default/files/styles/news/public/tesla_moderate_crash_iihs_side_view_1200.jpg?itok=2QSx_AKf" alt="2019 Tesla Model 3 Crash Test 40 MPH" width="700" height="394" loading="lazy" /></p> <p>The difference is startling. In the first image, not only has the engine been pushed back into the passenger compartment no doubt causing severe injuries to the driver and front passenger, but you can see the center of the car has been compressed, likely causing injuries to other passengers in the vehicle. </p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong><br> Tesla does a lot of things to make their cars safe. I haven't even touched on their active safety measures whose goal is to avoid a crash and minimize injuries to passengers and pedestrians. Tesla has shown a consistent interest in raising the bar in auto safety. This hasn't been highlighted as a major selling feature so far as the cars have been bought by a combination of environmentally concerned customers and performance oriented enthusiasts. As Tesla looks to move into the mainstream family car market over the next few years and sell millions of cars a year, they will need to highlight some of their safety advantages to grow their market share.<br> <br><br> Reference: <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/tesla/model-3-4-door-sedan/2020" target="_blank">IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick + Tesla Model 3</a><br> <br><br> <a href="https://www.tesla.com/blog/model-3-lowest-probability-injury-any-vehicle-ever-tested-nhtsa" target="_blank">Model 3 achieves the lowest probability of injury of any vehicle ever tested by NHTSA</a><br> <br><br> <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/users/paul-fosse" target="_blank">Paul Fosse</a> is a Software Engineer delivering financial data marts using massively parallel databases (Exadata and GreenPlum) for a major healthcare insurer and a lifelong lover of cars. He didn’t even have to trespass to get these shots of the new car. He reported that since he was driving a Model 3 himself, he blended right in. In <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11826/refreshed-tesla-model-3-starts-roll-line-fremont-california-electrek" target="_blank">the earlier article</a>, we said Tesla’s don’t have model years. Technically, all cars have to have a model year and these are 2021 models. What Tinsae meant is that Tesla doesn’t just save up all their changes for a new model year, they roll them out as they are ready. That doesn’t mean that a few updates don’t come together like we are seeing now. </p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="es" dir="ltr">hella Teslas <a href="https://t.co/tSnNpvOVSd" target="_blank">pic.twitter.com/tSnNpvOVSd</a></p> <p>— Whole Mars Catalog (@WholeMarsBlog) <a href="https://twitter.com/WholeMarsBlog/status/1314458032596688896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_blank">October 9, 2020</a></p></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script><p>He found these cars by noticing a truckload of Teslas Model 3's looked a little different (black trim versus chrome) and he turned around and followed the truck. The most interesting picture of the bunch to me is the one of the interior. It's hard to see how the new center console will work, but I love the new matte finish and the contrasting white stitching. The old high gloss black was critized by most reviewers and I can verify it shows fingerprints. Many people install a sticker to cover the glossy black. The black vegan leather is a little bland, so the white stitching dresses up the car nicely. Likewise, the chrome outside is standard issue with most cars, but since the Model 3 is something special, why shouldn't it have chrome delete from the factory? This update will make it either harder to tell a 3 from a Y, since they will both have chrome delete. From a distance, it will be tough to tell them apart unless you have vision. </p> <p><br><br> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/news/public/m3_bar_code_1200.jpg?itok=fjHAvXDx" alt="Barcode of Refreshed 2021 Tesla Model 3 Long Range " width="700" height="394" loading="lazy" /><br> <br><br> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/news/public/m3_quarter_1200.jpg?itok=uBRAE_xn" alt="Rear Quarter of Refreshed 2021 Tesla Model 3 Long Range Showing Chrome Delete" width="700" height="394" loading="lazy" /><br> <br></p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong><br> Within a week or two, we should have the first delivery of a refreshed Model 3. We might even get a press release explaining the new updates, but don't bet on it. Tesla operates differently than any other automaker and doesn't always announce its updates. They leave it to journalists and fans to promote their cars.<br> <br><br> A few hours after I published this article, a new leak appeared to give a much better view of the interior.</p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="it" dir="ltr">⚡️ NEW MODEL 3 CENTER CONSOLE ⚡️ <a href="https://t.co/0vsAlgfXkt" target="_blank">pic.twitter.com/0vsAlgfXkt</a></p> <p>— @jstesla (@jstesla) <a href="https://twitter.com/jstesla/status/1314739304770412545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_blank">October 10, 2020</a></p></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script><p>I wasn't able to find out more about how this member of Tesla Owners East Bay Club obtained the picture he posted to twitter. </p> <p>Reference: <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11826/refreshed-tesla-model-3-starts-roll-line-fremont-california-electrek" target="_blank">Refreshed Tesla Model 3 Starts To Roll Off The Line in Fremont California - Electrek<br> </a><br> <br><br> <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/users/paul-fosse" target="_blank">Paul Fosse</a> is a Software Engineer delivering financial data marts using massively parallel databases (Exadata and GreenPlum) for a major healthcare insurer and a lifelong lover of cars. Nissan Follows Tesla In Announcing Partial Driving Automation Standard On Every Car

I think they are the first major automaker (unless you consider Tesla to be a major automaker, which is debatable) to announce not only is driving assistance available on all future cars, but that it is a standard feature, not an extra cost option. They did say this would not be the case in countries and regions without the necessary highway infrastructure (which might just mean painted lines on the road, I don't think it is anything hitech like 5g communications). </p> <p>The auto industry has had cruise control as long as I can remember. First as an option to not just give you a constant throttle, but adjust it as you go up and down hills to keep a constant speed. Next, adaptive cruise control uses radar to adjust the speed so if the car in front of you is going slower than you, it slows you down to their speed. This "level 1" autonomy (which is called Pro Pilot 1.0 by Nissan) is what Nissan will include as standard equipment on their less expensive models. </p> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HNvLLifrEqA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><p> <br><br> Pro Pilot 2.0 will be standard on the <a href="https://youtu.be/2SbaCB-4nd8" target="_blank">new Nissan Ariya</a> and other higher priced cars. Pro Pilot 2.0, developed with the help of Intel subsidiary Mobileye. Mobileye developed Telsa's first generation autopilot until <a href="https://www.industryweek.com/technology-and-iiot/emerging-technologies/article/21976810/mobileye-parts-ways-with-tesla" target="_blank">Tesla decided to go their own way in 2016</a>. Mobileye technology is used in more than 40 million cars of 313 models of cars from 27 OEM partners. This adds lane keeping and lane change assistance to the adaptive speed control of Pro Pilot 1.0. This is roughly comparable to the level of driver assistance availabe on every on every Tesla sold since 2016 at extra cost and made a standard feature in every <a href="https://www.tesla.com/support/autopilot#:~:text=All%20new%20Tesla%20cars%20come,be%20added%20to%20your%20car." target="_blank">Tesla since April 2019</a>. Tesla also includes the hardware for full self driving in every car built after October 2016, but charges a fee of $8,000 to enable the unfinished software. Tesla plans to continue to increase the price as the software gains more capability over time. </p> <p><br><br> <strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p>I think Tesla was the first to see that driver assistance could be a major differentiating feature of their cars and Nissan is the first major OEM to follow their lead by announcing they will provide features to every new car introduced. There are some significant catches in that they aren't adding this to existing models, but to the new models as they are refreshed or introduced. The decision to only offer steering assistance on higher priced vehicles is another significant limitation. The lack of any over the air software updates means your car won't get any better with time unless they provide an update through their dealer network. Nissan also makes no claim that a car you buy today will be able to drive itself at some point in the future as Tesla does. Even with these limitations, I think the rest of the industry will notice and feel pressured to respond.</p> <p><br></p> <p>Reference: <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Nissan-to-offer-partial-driving-automation-standard-on-new-cars" target="_blank">Nissan to offer partial driving automation standard on new cars</a><br> <br><br> <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/users/paul-fosse" target="_blank">Paul Fosse</a> is a Software Engineer delivering financial data marts using massively parallel databases (Exadata and GreenPlum) for a major healthcare insurer and a lifelong lover of cars. That level of dominance wasn't sustainable. There was a lot of people in Norway that had ordered a Tesla Model 3 the same day I did, March 31, 2016. Tesla had a soft quarter in the US since the tax credit had just been cut in half and the first quarter is always seasonably slow. Tesla took advantage of their production capacity to send some cars to the Norway market that had been waiting almost 3 years for the Model 3. At that time, their other choices were that you could have an affordable EV like a Nissan Leaf with a lower range, performance and feature set. Or you could pay about twice the money for a Tesla Model X or S. What about gas and diesel cars you might ask. Well, gas is over <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/221368/gas-prices-around-the-world/#:~:text=At%207.32%20U.S.%20dollars%20per,region%20where%20oil%20is%20abundant." target="_blank">$7 a gallon in Norway due to high taxes that discourage the purchase and use of gas cars</a>. Electricity on the <a href="https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/Norway/electricity_prices/#:~:text=Norway%2C%20March%202020%3A%20The%20price,of%20power%2C%20distribution%20and%20taxes." target="_blank">other hand is very reasonable at about 9 cents a kWH</a>. This means comparing a Model 3 to a gas car that gets 25 mpg, the gas car would cost about $28 to drive a 100 miles (use 4 gallons at $7 a gallon). The Model 3 would use about 25 kWh at 9 cents a kWh or about $2.25 in gas or over 90% savings in fuel. You can see why EV's have such a great adoption in Norway! </p> <p><strong>Current Situation</strong></p> <p>The reason Tesla's sales are not leading the market are 2 fold. </p> <ol> <li>The competition is stronger. The VW ID.3, Polestar 2, MG Mini EV, Audi E-tron, Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro were not widely available in March 2019.</li> <li>The Tesla was caught by surprise by the COVID 19 shutdown of their factory in California. By the time the factory reopened, it was too late to ship cars to Europe for the second quarter. Had Tesla put cars on a boat to go to Europe, they would have missed out on recognizing those sales in the second quarter and not been profitable. So Norway and the rest of Europe had few Tesla's to sell in the second quarter.</li> </ol> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Remember that these people selling these Model 3s, paid less than this when it was new! <br><br>There is no reason for this, unless Norway is getting a lot less Model 3s than they need AND that Tesla keep the price high to milk the market, while filling up orders in other markets.</p> <p>— Kimmono (@kimmono) <a href="https://twitter.com/kimmono/status/1313578176581439488?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_blank">October 6, 2020</a></p></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script><p> <br><br> You can see that since the used cars are selling for a premium to the new Tesla Model 3's, as soon as Tesla can get more cars shipped to Norway, they will be able to retake some share, even before the Berlin Gigafactory opens and further improves their competitive position. Of course, by then, there will be more better competition for them also. It will be an exciting 12 months and we expect the percentage of EV's sold in Norway to continue to climb until it reaches 100%. This will happen by 2025, since gas and diesel cars sales will be banned, but it might even happen sooner if nobody wants one in say, 2024.<br> <br></p> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cjIcJ4EScCE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><p><br><br> <strong>Future Situation</strong></p> <p>Next year, as the Berlin Gigafatory starts to build Model Y vehicles and later Model 3 cars, Tesla will be a much stronger position to retake the leading position in Norway's EV market. They will have lower shipping costs and <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/11681/model-y-pricing-europe-analyzing-why-it-could-be-less-you-think" target="_blank">they may be able to reduce prices more than you think as we speculated in this article</a>. In addition, the wait time to receive a vehicle ordered should be considerably lower as the factory will be close to the markets and supply should be more in line with demand. </p> <p><br><br> <a href="https://www.torquenews.com/users/paul-fosse" target="_blank">Paul Fosse</a> is a Software Engineer delivering financial data marts using massively parallel databases (Exadata and GreenPlum) for a major healthcare insurer and a lifelong lover of cars. The following chart of sales in the first half of 2020 compared to the previous year was shared at Tesla's battery day last week. </p> <p><img src="/sites/default/files/styles/news/public/2019_sales_resized.jpg?itok=zstvPmOz" alt="Tesla vs Competitors 2019 Sales" width="700" height="394" loading="lazy" /></p> <p>So what caused this incredible outperformance? I attribute it to the following factors:</p> <ol> <li>The volume production of the Tesla Model Y, a car I've <a href="https://cleantechnica.com/2019/03/15/why-the-tesla-model-y-3rd-row-is-the-key-to-it-becoming-the-best-selling-vehicle-in-the-world/" target="_blank">written about</a> since I first saw it at the unveiling over a year ago. A car that the Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/is-teslas-model-y-crossover-the-worlds-best-car-11591365620" target="_blank">seriously wonders if it the best car in the world</a>. Its no surprise that ramping production of a car with almost univeral glowing reviews in the hottest market segment (crossovers) is going to give Tesla a bump. </li> <li>Tesla was way ahead of the industy when COVID caused buyers to want to do as much online as possible. Tesla had attempted to go 100% online in 2019 and backed off after customers weren't quite ready to make the leap, but the whole exercise put Tesla miles ahead of the industy in having systems that can handle the transaction remotely and made it relatively easy for them to go to a 100% touchless experience for their buyers.</li> <li>Last but not least, Tesla owners continue to tell their friends, lockdown or no lockdown that they love their cars. This army of satisfied customers drives sales without the high marketing costs needed by the rest of the industry to drive traffic to their dealers.</li> </ol> <p><a href="https://www.torquenews.com/users/paul-fosse" target="_blank">Paul Fosse</a> is a Software Engineer delivering financial data marts using massively parallel databases (Exadata and GreenPlum) for a major healthcare insurer and a lifelong lover of cars.
